Remove Image Background in Seconds
Cut out people from any photo with an AI portrait model, fine-tune the edges, and save a transparent PNG or a new white, blue or custom background.

From busy backdrop to clean cutout in three moves
Upload and crop
Drop, paste or pick a JPG, PNG or WEBP photo, then drag the free crop frame so it hugs your subject. Cropping first keeps the cutout fast and detailed.
Let the AI cut it out
A portrait-matting model runs on your own device and separates the person from the background in seconds, keeping fine hair and soft shoulder edges.
Refine and download
Tune the edges, paint over any stray spots, choose a transparent, coloured, blurred or custom background, and save a PNG or JPG.
Accurate where it counts, simple everywhere else
Portrait-grade AI cutout
A matting model built for people keeps hair strands, shoulders and soft edges natural instead of harsh, jagged and chopped off.
Smart edge refine
Outlines snap to the real edges in your photo, with sliders for position, crispness and feather.
Erase and restore
Paint away leftovers or bring back missing parts, with undo and reset.
Any background you need
Go transparent, choose white, blue or any colour for passport and ID photos, blur the original, or drop in your own image.
Private by design
Your photo never leaves your device. Only the AI model is downloaded, once, and saved by your browser.
Fast on weak phones
A lighter model steps in when memory is low, so older Android phones can still finish the job.

Remove Background NowEverything about removing photo backgrounds
What a background remover actually does
A background remover separates the main subject of a photo, usually a person, from everything behind them. The result is a cutout with a transparent background that you can leave empty, fill with a solid colour, blur, or swap for a completely different picture. People use it for passport and ID photos, profile pictures, resumes, social posts, presentation slides and online application forms.
Doing this by hand with a selection tool takes patience, especially around hair. An AI cutout does the heavy lifting in seconds, and the touch-up brush lets you correct the few spots the automatic result misses.
How the AI separates you from the background
Simple background removers create a hard yes-or-no mask: every pixel is either kept or deleted. That often leaves jagged outlines and chopped-off hair. This tool uses a portrait matting model, which estimates how much of each pixel belongs to the person. Strands of hair and soft shoulder edges receive partial transparency, so they blend smoothly into any new background.
After the model runs, a second step called guided filtering compares the mask with the real edges in your photo and snaps the outline into place. You then control the final look with the position, crispness and feather sliders.
How to take a photo that cuts out cleanly
A clean original beats any amount of editing. A little care before you press the shutter makes the cutout almost effortless.
- Use even light. Soft daylight from a window avoids harsh shadows that confuse the edge.
- Create contrast. Wear colours that differ from the wall behind you.
- Step away from the wall. A metre of space prevents your shadow from landing on the background.
- Keep it sharp. Hold the phone steady and avoid blurry or heavily compressed pictures.
- Show the full outline. Leave a little room around the head and shoulders.
Passport, visa and ID photo backgrounds
Official photos usually need a plain background, most often white, off-white, light grey or light blue. Upload your portrait, open the Background section and choose Colour. Swatches for white, sky blue, blue, red and grey are ready, and the colour picker covers any other shade.
Requirements vary by country, exam and application, so always check the official notice for the exact colour, size and file limits. Once the background is ready, open our Name and Date Photo tool to crop to the right shape, add your name and date, and compress the file to the exact KB your form allows.
Fixing hair, halos and stray patches
Thin light or dark outlines around a subject are called halos. They appear when edge pixels still carry colour from the old background. Move the Edge position slider slightly inward to trim them. If the hair looks too harsh, lower Crispness or add a little Feather; if the outline looks fuzzy, raise Crispness.
For leftover patches, such as a chair back or the gap between an arm and the body, switch to Erase and paint over them. To recover missing parts like an ear or a wisp of hair, switch to Restore. The brush size is adjustable and every stroke can be undone.
Choosing between a transparent PNG and a JPG
A PNG keeps transparency, so it is the right choice for logos, stickers, presentations and design work. A JPG cannot be transparent, but it produces a much smaller file, which suits application forms and uploads with a size limit.
If you choose JPG while the background is transparent, the empty area is filled with white. When you have added a colour, blur or image background, JPG is usually the best pick.
Privacy, speed and older phones
Everything happens on your device, so your photo is never uploaded to a server. The first run downloads the AI model, a one-time payload that your browser then stores. A progress bar shows the download, and later photos start almost instantly.
If your phone is old or short on memory and the full model cannot run, the tool offers a lighter model that is smaller and gentler on memory. On any device, cropping close to the subject first helps, because a smaller picture is processed faster.
