CAT photograph and signature at a glance
The Common Admission Test is conducted by one of the IIMs each year, and the registration page asks for a photograph and a signature. Recent notices give both files a ceiling of 80 KB in JPG or JPEG format, and describe the shapes in millimetres: a photograph of about 30 by 45 mm and a signature of about 80 by 35 mm. They do not give a pixel size, so the pixel values below are our own defaults that match those shapes.
| Document | File size | Dimensions | What it should show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photograph | 5 to 80 KB | 300 × 450 px | A recent colour photo in a 30 × 45 mm shape |
| Signature | 5 to 80 KB | 400 × 175 px | Your own signature in dark ink on white paper |
The IIM that conducts CAT changes every year and the notice can change with it. Please compare these numbers with the current instructions on the registration page and edit them in Customise if needed.
Which candidates can use this tool
Every CAT candidate uses the same two images, whether you apply for the IIMs, for other business schools that accept CAT, or for management programmes that ask you to share your CAT profile. Because the two files are used again when you download the admit card and at the test centre, it is worth getting them right at registration.
Preparing your files from start to finish
- Photograph. Select Photograph, upload a clear portrait and centre your face in the crop frame.
- Check the size chip. It should show a value under 80 KB with a green tick. Download the file.
- Signature. Sign on white paper with a dark pen, photograph it from above and upload it on the Signature tab.
- Crop to the ink. The frame is wide, so leave a small margin on the left and right.
- Keep both. The ZIP button saves the pair together.
Getting the CAT photograph right
A good picture saves time at the test centre, where it is matched against your admit card and your identity proof. Face a window for soft light, stand in front of a plain light wall and look straight ahead.
- Look like you. Use a recent picture without heavy edits.
- Clear face. No dark glasses, caps or hair across the eyes.
- Right proportions. The crop frame uses the 30 × 45 mm shape.
- Plain backdrop. The background remover can clean up a busy wall.
Making a clean signature image
Use a dark pen on plain white paper and sign the way you do on official documents. Photograph the sheet flat, from straight above. Leave ink clean-up on so the paper turns white and the strokes stay dark. Since the signature frame is wide, a horizontal signature fits neatly.
Details that save a second attempt
- The limit is a maximum, so a file of 30 or 40 KB is fine. The tool aims just under the limit to keep quality high.
- Do not rename a PNG or a screenshot to .jpg. This tool always saves a real JPEG.
- Keep the files in a folder, because you may need them when you apply to individual institutes.
Common reasons CAT uploads fail
- The file is larger than 80 KB.
- The file is a PNG, a PDF or a renamed screenshot.
- The photograph is blurred, too dark or has a busy background.
- The signature is cropped badly or too faint to read.
- The photograph and signature were uploaded in each other’s slots.
Staying private while you prepare files
Everything is processed on your device, so your photograph and signature are never sent to our servers. When a file is ready you can download it, save both in a ZIP, or use Share to pass the image and a link to this page to another phone. Delete shared copies from chats afterwards.
