Photograph and signature at a glance
Applications for a learner licence, a permanent driving licence, a renewal or a duplicate go through the Sarathi Parivahan portal run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Guides for the portal describe the photograph as a JPG of 420 Γ 525 pixels and the signature as a JPG of 256 Γ 64 pixels, with both files between 10 and 20 KB.
| Document | File size | Dimensions | What it should show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo | 10 to 20 KB | 420 Γ 525 px | A recent colour photo, 35 Γ 45 mm shape, plain white background |
| Signature | 10 to 20 KB | 256 Γ 64 px | Your own signature in dark ink on white paper |
Some other guides quote different values, such as 200 Γ 230 pixels for the photograph and 20 to 50 KB. The portal and the rules vary by state and have changed over time. Please read the instruction text on the upload page, and edit the numbers in Customise if they differ.
Which applicants can use this tool
Anyone applying for a learner licence, a permanent licence, an international driving permit, a renewal, an address change or a duplicate can use the same two files. The photograph and signature are printed on your licence card, so they matter more than on most forms.
Preparing your files from start to finish
- Photograph. Select Photo, upload a clear portrait and centre your face in the crop frame.
- Check the chips. Wait for size and dimensions to turn green, then download.
- Signature. Switch tabs, upload a photo of your signature on white paper and crop it into the wide frame.
- Save both. The ZIP button keeps the pair together.
- Upload carefully. Put each file in the correct slot on the portal.
Getting the licence photograph right
The picture ends up on a small card, so clarity matters. Face a window for soft daylight, stand in front of a plain white wall and look straight at the lens.
- Face fully visible. No caps, masks or dark glasses.
- Proper framing. Your head should fill most of the picture, with a little space above your hair.
- White backdrop. The background remover can replace a coloured wall with white.
- No filters. The photo is matched to you at the RTO.
Making a clean signature image
Use a dark blue or black pen on plain white paper and sign as you do on official papers. Your licence signature should match the one you give at the test and on later documents. The frame is very wide and short, so a signature with a long horizontal stroke fits best. Keep ink clean-up on to whiten the paper and darken the ink.
Details that save a second attempt
- The file range is narrow. If the portal refuses a file, change the target by a point or two and download again.
- Guides recommend scanning rather than photographing documents. For a signature on a phone, flat daylight and ink clean-up get close to a scan.
- Keep a spare copy of both files for renewal, since the same pair is reused.
Common reasons uploads fail
- The file is outside the 10 to 20 KB range.
- The pixel size is not what the page asks for.
- The photograph has a coloured background or shadows.
- The signature is faint or touches the edges of the frame.
- The file is not a real JPEG.
Staying private while you prepare files
Everything is processed on your device, so your photograph and signature are never sent to our servers. When a file is ready you can download it, save both in a ZIP, or use Share to pass the image and a link to this page to another phone. Delete shared copies from chats afterwards.
