GATE photograph and signature at a glance
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is conducted by one of the IITs or the IISc each year, and the organising institute runs the application portal, called GOAPS. Unlike many exams, GATE publishes a range for the file size and the pixels, not a single fixed value. Recent notices describe the photograph as a JPG from 200 × 260 to 530 × 690 pixels, with a width to height ratio between 0.66 and 0.89, and the signature as a JPG from 250 × 80 to 580 × 180 pixels.
| Document | File size | Dimensions | What it should show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photograph | 5 to 600 KB | 350 × 450 px | A recent colour passport-size photo, 3.5 × 4.5 cm shape |
| Signature | 3 to 300 KB | 400 × 130 px | Your own signature in black or dark blue ink |
The tool starts at values in the middle of those ranges. File size limits quoted are 5 to 600 KB for the photograph and 3 to 300 KB for the signature, so there is plenty of room. Because the organising institute changes every year, always check the current notice, and edit the numbers in Customise if they differ.
Which GATE candidates can use this tool
Every GATE paper uses the same application and the same two images, whether you take Computer Science, Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical or any other paper. The tool also helps if you are correcting a photograph after registration, which the portal allows during a limited window.
Many PSUs recruit through GATE scores and later ask for the same photograph and signature again, so keep your finished files in a folder.
Preparing your files from start to finish
- Photograph. Select Photograph, upload a clear portrait and centre your face in the crop frame.
- Check the chips. Wait for the size and dimensions to turn green, then download the file.
- Signature. Sign inside a clean white box with black or dark blue ink, photograph or scan it and upload it on the Signature tab.
- Fill the frame. The notice asks the signature to cover most of the image, so crop close.
- Keep both. The ZIP button saves the pair together.
Getting the GATE photograph right
The notice asks for a good quality colour photograph of passport size with a white background. Face a window for even light, stand in front of a plain white wall and look straight at the lens.
- Front view only. Do not tilt your head or turn to one side.
- No caps, hats or dark glasses. If your spectacles reflect light, remove them for the picture.
- Keep the ratio. The crop frame is locked to the passport shape, which sits inside the allowed range.
- White backdrop. The background remover can replace a coloured wall with white.
Making a clean GATE signature
GATE asks for black or dark blue ink only, and for the signature to fill most of the image, roughly 70 to 80 per cent. Official guidance prefers a scanner, because a phone photo can leave a dark or uneven background. If you must use a phone, put the paper on a flat surface in daylight, photograph from straight above and keep ink clean-up switched on. It whitens the paper and darkens the ink, which gets close to a scan.
Sign in your usual way, since the signature is also compared with the one you write at the exam centre.
Details that save a second attempt
- A scanned photo ID, with Aadhaar preferred, may also be requested as a PDF. That is a separate upload and not handled here.
- Certificates for category, disability or dyslexia are uploaded as PDFs.
- Use the same photograph on the portal and at the exam centre, since staff compare them.
- If the portal flags a mismatch after registration, use the correction window and upload a new file.
Common reasons GATE uploads fail
- The pixel size falls outside the range allowed for the photograph or signature.
- The photograph has a coloured or patterned background.
- The signature is in a light colour, or has a dark shadowed background.
- The signature is too small inside the frame.
- The file is not a real JPEG.
Staying private while you prepare files
Everything is processed inside your browser, so your photograph and signature are never sent to our servers. When a file is ready you can download it, save both in a ZIP, or use Share to pass the image and a link to this page to another phone. Delete shared copies from chats afterwards.
