SSC photo and signature requirements at a glance
Most SSC online applications ask you to upload two images: a recent passport-style photograph and a scanned signature. Both must be JPEG files within a narrow size range, and the dimensions are given in centimetres rather than pixels. The values below are the ones commonly published in recent notices, and they are the defaults in this tool.
| Item | File size | Dimensions | Pixels at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photograph | 20 to 50 KB | 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm | 413 × 531 |
| Signature | 10 to 20 KB | 4.0 cm × 2.0 cm | 472 × 236 |
SSC revises its instructions from one notification to the next, so always compare these numbers with the notice of your own exam. If anything differs, open the Customise section in the tool and enter the new values.
Which SSC exams can use this tool
The tool is driven by numbers rather than by exam names, so it works for any SSC recruitment that uses the same photo and signature rules. That includes the combined graduate level exam (CGL), the combined higher secondary level exam (CHSL), multi-tasking staff (MTS), GD constable in the central armed police forces, CPO sub-inspector posts in Delhi Police and the CAPFs, Delhi Police constable, stenographer, junior engineer and selection post exams.
Because requirements can change between exams and years, the quickest safe habit is to read the photo section of your notice, then check that the green ticks in this tool match it before you download.
How to resize your SSC photo and signature
- Select Photo. Drop in a clear, recent portrait or choose one from your gallery.
- Crop. Keep the crop frame on the SSC shape and centre your face with a little space above the head.
- Add the strip if required. If your notice asks for name and date, switch on the strip and type them.
- Download the photo. Check that the size chip is green, then save the JPG.
- Select Signature. Photograph your signature on white paper, crop tightly, keep ink clean-up on and download the second file.
How to take a photo that SSC will accept
A good file starts with a good picture. Stand facing a window or another soft light source so that your face is evenly lit, and keep a plain light wall behind you. Look straight at the camera with a natural expression and keep your full face visible.
- Use a recent picture. It should look like you on exam day.
- Avoid shadows. Harsh light under the chin or beside the nose looks poor after compression.
- Keep a plain background. If yours is busy, use our background remover to make it white.
- Do not use filters. Beauty effects and heavy retouching can lead to rejection.
How to prepare a clean signature image
Sign with a dark pen, preferably black or blue, on plain white paper without lines. Photograph the page from directly above in daylight so no shadows fall across the ink. Then crop close to the signature, leaving only a thin margin, and let the ink clean-up whiten the paper and darken the strokes.
Sign the way you normally do, because the signature on your application should be consistent with the one you will use at the exam centre. If the lines look thin after compression, use a thicker pen and retake the photo rather than stretching the image.
Common reasons uploads are rejected
- The file is larger than the maximum or smaller than the minimum.
- The photo is cropped with the wrong proportions, which stretches the face.
- The picture is blurry, dark or taken from a screenshot.
- The signature is too light, too small or surrounded by shadows.
- The file is saved as PNG or another format instead of JPEG.
- The date or name on the strip is missing when the notice demands it.
Every one of these is easy to avoid with the live checks in this tool.
When do you need a name and date strip?
Some SSC notices have asked candidates to print their name and the date the photo was taken on a white strip at the bottom of the picture, while others have not. Read the instructions of your exam carefully. If a strip is required, switch it on, type your name and the date in the style the notice shows, and the strip height will adjust to your text. If it is not required, leave the switch off so the full photo stays clean.
Safe, fast and free
Your photo and signature are processed inside your own browser, so they are never uploaded to a server. That matters for identity photos. The tool keeps a small margin below each maximum so that your file passes even if a portal counts one kilobyte as 1,000 bytes instead of 1,024. After you download, keep the originals safe in case a later notice asks for a different size.
